Color Matching:

Q: Can you match my color if it's not on the website?

A: Yes, we can custom match colors with a provided paint sample. Contact us to make a custom color request.

Brush/Roll Application:

Q: What roller should I use with the brush/roll activator?

A: We recommend the EMC 6” foam cigar roller or your standard yellow West Systems roller.

Q: What brush is best for touch-ups and fine details?

A: For touch-ups and fine detail work, use a standard foam disposable brush.

Q: What brush is recommended for varnish application?

A: Apply varnish with a standard foam disposable brush, holding it at a 45-degree angle.

Q: How much should I wait between coats?

A: The time between painting coats is called the overcoat time or re-coat time. For our Quantum99, UV Varnish, and Quantum High Gloss clear the re-coat time is approximately between 4 hours and 12 hours. If second coat needs to be applied after the 12 hour window, scuff sand with 320-800 grit sandpaper to open the paint's "pores" before putting on another coat. This is a rough estimate as the recoat time window will vary based on environmental conditions such as moisture, temperature, etc.

Paint Characteristics:

Q: Why does the paint look thin when I open the can?

A: All our resins are liquid at room temperature.

Q: What is the full cure time?

A: The full cure time is seven days.

Q: How long should I wait before buffing/polishing after the final coat?

A: At 72 degrees or above, waiting until the next day should be fine.

Q: How long should I wait after the final coat to apply or pull tape for lines?

A: At 72 degrees or above, the next day should be fine.

Spray and Roll Application:

Q: When is the best time to start painting?

A: It is always best to start painting in the morning to limit the impact of environmental factors. If you start too late, it you may encounter a problem with the dew point which can lead to problems with the paint curing and de-glossing( paint want be shiny and have nice mirror like finish).

Q: How many coats do I need when using the spray application method?

A: Apply 2-3 coats to achieve at least 3 dry mils.

Q: How much time should it be between coats?

A: The time between coats is known as the overcoat or recoat time.

     - When spraying Quantum99 the re-coat time is 30 minutes minimum and 24 hours max

      - When spraying NauticoatXP the re-coat time is 30 minutes minimum 24 hours max.

These are recommendations when conditions are ideal. In real life due to environmental factors these properties can change. Once the paint is no longer tacky it is fine to recoat it. If you apply paint after the 24 hour window you will need to scuff the coating with sandpaper, 220-800 grit, to make sure you get proper adhesion.

Clear Coat:

Q: Is a clear coat necessary?

A: Quantum products do not require a clear coat, but one can be applied for optimal performance. Customers will use clear coat for easier repairability in the case of deep scratches and nicks so they don't have to do the "burning in" process when repairing the paint.
