What Makes Long Lasting Marine Paint

What Makes Long Lasting Marine Paint

When it comes to value you want to put your money behind something that is going to last. Quantum has two paints that go above and beyond in terms of toughness and durability in Quantum99 and NauticoatXP. We stand by that statement but, being the best doesn't mean anything if you can't measure it. So how do we measure what is the best? And what does that mean for you the boat owner.

The Science of Shine: High Gloss Marine Paint?

When we talk about high gloss paint, we're really focusing on its ability to reflect light, creating a smooth, mirror-like finish. A key factor in achieving this is something called Distinction of Image (DOI).

In simple terms, DOI in high gloss paint refers to how clearly you can see reflected images in the paint's surface. A high DOI means the surface is extremely smooth and reflective, producing a crisp, undistorted reflection. It's the difference between a high-definition mirror and looking at yourself in an old spoon.

So, a high gloss paint with a high DOI will not only look shiny, but it will also provide a very clear and sharp reflection, giving that desirable "wet look" and a premium, high-quality finish.

Durable, Robust Color

At Quantum we have a color standard of 0.5 DE. This is a measurement of how close one color is to the another paint. The main advantage of paint over gelcoat is that its color remains its "true" color for longer. Things such as environmental pollutants, UV rays, saltwater, moisture, and oxidation all contributes to the fading of paint and gelcoat. Quantum can say that we last longer from fading because we have put our paint to the test.

Salt Spray Supremacy: Where Quantum Stands Alone

A salt spray chamber test is a method used to simulate the corrosive effects of saltwater on marine paint. Our paints have undergone rigorous testing in a salt spray chamber for 10,000 hours to ensure their durability in saltwater environments. The industry standard for other popular bands is only 3,000 hours. As innovators we never settle for good or good enough, which is why we last 3X longer. The chart below shows our results after 10,000 hours and competitors after 3,000 hours.

Weathering the Storm and Sun

The xenon arc chamber test is another form of accelerated weathering test that exposes the paint to intense UV radiation. It is meant to simulate the paint being exposed to even the most extreme Florida sun year round. Quantum paint has been tested for 10,000 hours in a xenon arc chamber which is equivalent to about 10 years real time. The results show no significant decrease in gloss until 6,000 hours or about 6 years in real. In comparison the leading marine paints on the market can expect to experience a greater than 30% gloss loss in less than half the time.

More Waves, Less Waxes

With Quantum and NauticoatXP marine paints, you can trust that your vessel will maintain its sleek and vibrant appearance for years to come. Imagine spending more time on the water and less time redoing your boat. And if you ever want to give it a little extra shine, just a wash with soap and water will do the trick, instead of expensive waxes or ceramic coats.
